M N D F L | Event: The MNDFL Brain: Meditation & Neuroscience for Well-Being with Ellie Cobb

Oct 4, 2018 7:00 PM

Okay, you've heard research says that meditation is good for us, but what does that really mean? Join Dr. Ellie Cobb for an evening exploring the science behind meditation and the powerful practices that increase our well-being. All of this scientific evidence reveals what meditators have known for a few thousand years (but thank you to all the universities for proving it): that meditation leads to structural changes in our brain so we're left with decreased anxiety, depression, and stress, and increased focus, emotion regulation, and joy. How can you reap these benefits? That's what we'll dive into.

Intro to Mindfulness and Loving-Kindness: Our 6 Week Class

Oct 4, 2018 7:15 PM

So you've been coming to MNDFL and want to deepen your meditation practice but you don't feel completely ready for a teacher training - there's got to be a middle ground, right? We got you.

Six Thursday evenings, 7:15 - 8:45pm from October 4th - November 8th
with Lodro Rinzler and Kevin Townley

Over these six weeks you will experience three types of shamatha (peaceful-abiding meditation aka what you often experience in MNDFL Breath) while learning the ins-and-outs of mindfulness like "where did it come from?" "what's the difference between that and mantra stuff anyway?" and "can we make it so my foot stops falling asleep?" Then once your foot is awake, we explore another foundational type of meditation: loving-kindness. In addition to class each week you will receive assigned reading (nothing super long we promise) and have an accountability partner for your daily meditation practice. Full sched is below. Spots are limited . First come, first sit.

Week 1: Intro to Mindfulness - finding a posture that works best for you, why we focus on the breath and the attitude to develop when the mind wanders.

Week 2: The Roots of Mindfulness - the historical roots of mindfulness and how the Buddha taught it. We also cover how it has been practiced over time in different ways by different traditions.

Week 3: Being with Reality As Is - the view of mindfulness and how it can be applied to everyday life. A glimpse into the neuroscience research that has made the practice so popular today.

Week 4: Intro to Loving-Kindness - how to do contemplative practice / how it's different than mindfulness. We also cover the benefits of loving-kindness and the various steps of the practice, with a focus this week on offering love to yourself.

Week 5: The Roots of Loving-Kindness - the historical roots of loving-kindness and how it has morphed and changed since the Buddha first taught it. We also cover each person we contemplate in loving-kindness and the benefits and challenges of each step of the practice.

Week 6: Resting in Equanimity - a look at the four immeasurables - ways of letting love flow (um, reason enough to do this course) - and how both practices we have studied allow us to cultivate equanimity: stillness and an open heart (turns out: it's not a superpower but, like, a natural humanpower).

Breaking Bias: Loosening the Hold of Internalized Bias with Anurag Gupta

Oct 8, 2018 7:00 PM

Here's the thing about biases: you're not always aware you have them. And one of the main points of this whole meditation thing is to become more aware of all of who we are. Yes, that includes even the trickier parts of who we are. Bias is an increasingly loaded word in our polarized world and for good reason. Our internalized biases often prevent us from accurately perceiving ourselves and our worlds, limiting our ability to connect authentically with other people and even with ourselves. They can also be frustratingly hard to notice and disrupt. Join mindfulness teacher and renowned unconscious bias expert Anurag “Anu” Gupta to explore how we can use meditation and compassion practices to hack these universal biases to become more open, free and quite frankly, kind.
